Cancer-Causing NDMA Found in Zantac®

Unacceptable levels of a cancer-causing substance known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) have been discovered in ranitidine medications, known as the popular heartburn drug Zantac®.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that the amount of NDMA found in Zantac® can increase to unsafe levels over time due to body temperature or storage in higher-than-normal temperatures.

NDMA and Cancer

NDMA is a dangerous substance that has been linked to many types of cancer, including:

  • Gastric cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Leukemia
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Many others

It has been labeled as a probable human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency, the World Health Organization, the U.S. National Toxicology Program, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

The drug Zantac® has been found to contain levels of NDMA ranging from 3,000 to 26,000 times the safe ingestion limit established by the FDA.

Complications of Zantac® and NDMA

In addition to the risk of cancer, overexposure to NDMA found in Zantac® can carry a wide range of complications, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Severe stomach cramping
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Jaundice
  • Severe headaches
  • Enlarged liver
  • Diarrhea

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor right away.

Manufacturer Failed to Warn Consumers

The manufacturer of Zantac®, Sanofi, is facing lawsuits across the country on the allegation that they were fully aware that their ranitidine medications could produce dangerous levels of NDMA.

Drug companies have a legal obligation to inform consumers of any potential health risks associated with their medications. When companies put profits before the safety of people, they must be held accountable.

So far, there have been hundreds of lawsuits filed on behalf of cancer victims who were taking Zantac®.
