DePuy Hip Replacement Recalls
DePuy Orthopedics, manufacturers of the defective DePuy Hip Replacement systems, released this statement in regards to the recall:
“Data recently received by the company shows that more people than expected who received the ASR Hip System experienced pain and other symptoms that led to a second hip replacement surgery, called a revision surgery. For this reason, DePuy Orthopedics is voluntarily recalling its ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System. This recall means additional testing and treatment may be necessary to ensure the hip is functioning well. In some cases, patients may need additional surgery.”
Defective DePuy Hip Replacement Side Effects
One out of every eight patients who received a DePuy hip replacement system needed to have a second surgery in order to either repair or completely replace the device within five years. The DePuy ASR Hip Replacement system was recalled because pieces of the system were known to come loose. Loose components have been known to cause the following in patients:
- Pain
- Popping and grinding
- Metal sensitivity
- Infection
- Dislocation
- Bone fracture
- Depositing of metal fragments in the bloodstream
