I’m injured. I have been since September. I was at a CrossFit competition when I did something to my shoulder. It’s January. I still don’t know what that “something” was.

But I know it still hurts. And I know I’m still limited in what I’m able to do. But I’m stubborn (read: cheap). I don’t want to go to the doctor. So, I just keep putting it off. I was not injured by the negligence of anyone else. So I can get away with chomping on ibuprofen and whining rather than going to the doctor.

By contrast, if you were injured by the reckless actions of someone else, you better get yourself to the doctor. Like, right now. Suffering in (what my husband would not call) silence, is a bad plan.

If your injury and pain are not documented by a medical professional, it’s as though they don’t even exist. I know doctors are expensive. I know appointments are not on your list of things to do on a fun Friday night.

But I also know that if you don’t get your symptoms documented, you will not be compensated for them.

So please do as I say and not as I do and get yourself seen, preferably by a family doctor who can direct your treatment to the best next logical step to make sure that what you are going through is documented in a way that will make the insurance company notice and compensate you properly.
