Row Of Parked School Buses Stock Photo

Recently, a six-year-old girl was dragged nearly a mile by a school bus when her arm got caught in the door while the girl was attempting to get off the bus. The bus driver, apparently not seeing the girl, continued to the next bus stop before opening the door. While the girl’s shoes were destroyed, she suffered only minor injuries. Buses are big vehicles, and the young girl easily could have been more seriously injured. While it is important for bus drivers to keep children safe, there are things you and your child can do to keep your child safe in and around school buses.

  • Encourage your child to step away from the curb when waiting for the bus and to not step forward until the bus has come to a complete stop.
  • When exiting the bus, your child should hold the handrails to avoid falling. The child should watch to make sure backpacks and clothing do not get caught on anything when entering and exiting the bus. Tell your child to inform the bus driver if any clothing items get caught. Then the bus driver can either wait for the child or help the child get the item unstuck.
  • If the child drops something when entering or exiting the bus, tell the child to let the bus driver know. The child should never bend over to try to retrieve the item without the bus driver’s knowledge. The driver may not see the child.
  • When picking up your child from the bus stop, either wait on the same side of the road where the child will be dropped off, or teach your child to wait until it is safe to cross the street.

While children are generally safe riding the school bus, school bus accidents do happen. Sometimes other drivers trying to pass the bus or forgetting to look for children can cause an issue.
