Man Calling Tow Truck On Shoulder Of The Highway Stock Photo

After a late-night two-car crash on February 29, a man got out of his vehicle and was walking along Highway 29 when the man was struck and killed by another vehicle. Collisions on busy roads can be especially dangerous. Sometimes the aftereffects can be even more dangerous than the original crash. Fortunately, there are certain steps you can take to increase your chances of being safe after a crash on a busy road.

  • If possible, pull your vehicle off to the side of the road and turn it off. The farther off the road you can get your vehicle, the less likely it will be hit by another vehicle.
  • Check for injuries to yourself and any passengers. Treat any major injuries as well as possible.
  • Stay in your vehicle. Unless your vehicle is blocking the roadway or there is another problem with your vehicle, which may cause a safety issue, you are actually safer in your vehicle.
  • Turn on your hazard lights. This is especially important if you were involved in a wreck late at night. You want to make sure other drivers can see your vehicle. While traffic flares can also make your vehicle more visible, consider the potential risk to yourself before getting out of your vehicle to use them on a busy road.
  • Call the police to report the accident right away, especially if there were injuries from the crash. Let them know your location. Be as specific as possible about where the crash happened as well as about any injuries.
  • If you must get out of your vehicle, walk away from traffic, and wait for help to arrive. Do not walk along the side of a busy road near traffic. You could be hit by a vehicle.
