At the end of each year, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission’s Division of Law Enforcement publishes a report titled, Boating Accidents and Fatalities. Our personal injury lawyers know that it does not take into account all of the boating accidents that occur in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, but it does include a significant number of them.  In the 2014 report, the division reported 130 boating accidents, including more than 20 that turned fatal.

When Do Boating Accidents Happen in North Carolina?

Our personal injury lawyers noted that the majority of accidents took place from May until August. They involved a variety of common activities including, but not limited to cruising and fishing. Many of the people injured or killed in the boating accidents were between the ages of 20 and 60. And sadly, the chief reason the accidents occurred was operator negligence. The list of other reasons included congested waterways, hazardous boating environments and defective boating equipment.

Which Injuries Occur Most Often in NC Boating Accidents?

Collisions with people, immovable objects and other watercraft were among the most common types of accidents. They have a history of causing a variety of injuries ranging from the minor to the catastrophic. For example, people thrown overboard during collisions may sustain broken limbs, ruptured organs, closed head injuries and soft tissue damage. Consequently, they could find themselves faced with monstrous medical bills, job loss and a long list of personal care needs.
