At just before 3 AM on January 16, a Greensboro teen was hit by a vehicle and injured. The teen was wearing all black clothing and was walking along the travel portion of the road. While the teen survived the crash, he suffered bad injuries because of the crash and was still hospitalized several days after the accident. This accident is a reminder of the importance of nighttime pedestrian safety.

  • Whenever possible, avoid being a pedestrian at night. No matter what precautions you take, it is going to be harder for drivers to see you at night than it would be during the day.
  • If you must walk outside at night, try to avoid walking outside late at night when more drunk drivers will be on the road.
  • Travel along well-lit streets when possible. It is better to make your trip a little longer and pick well-lit streets rather than take a slightly shorter route along poorly lit streets.
  • Never wear black or dark clothing when traveling at night. Instead, wear bright, reflective clothing, which will make you more visible to drivers and others on the road.
  • Use a flashlight when walking at night. This is an especially good idea when you plan to cross the street or at other times when you want to make yourself more visible to drivers.
  • If there is a sidewalk, use it. If there is not a sidewalk, walk as close to the edge of the road as possible, especially if you are walking along a busy street. If there is not a sidewalk, you may want to walk in the grass or somewhere else where you will be off the road.

Unfortunately, sometimes drivers do not pay proper attention to pedestrians. If you were hit by a vehicle while walking, no matter the time of day, an accident attorney can help you. Contact us to learn what we can do for you.
