Over 80 percent of Americans believe that using a hands-free device while driving is safer than using a handheld device.
Unfortunately, this could not be further from the truth. More than 30 studies have been conducted by researchers all across America to determine how hands-free devices impact a person’s ability to drive.
The results are quite staggering. According to researchers, even when using a hands-free device, a driver misses nearly 50 percent of the activity around them.
This means that drivers who are using a hands-free device will fail to see traffic signs, traffic lights, pedestrians and other vehicles. Researchers point out that the mind is incredibly distracted during a conversation.
True safe driving is more than simply having your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Safety officials have shared that keeping your attention on the road is equally vital to safe driving.
Humans make decisions with their brains, and when the brain is distracted by a phone conversation or is listening to an app read a text message aloud, the brain’s attention is split between the road and the conversation.
Distracted driving accidents are a much larger concern than previously known. Officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration attribute more than 3,000 deaths to distracted driving accidents each year.
These fatal auto accidents could easily be avoided if drivers drove without relying on distracting technology whether the devices are handheld or hands-free.
