A Gates County deputy saved a person from a vehicle that was about to burn. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a single-vehicle accident occurred at about two o’clock in the morning on July 5.

Car Swerves Off Roadway

According to the state highway patrol, a male motorist was operating a 2006 Pontiac on U.S. Highway 13, southwest of Gatesville, when he lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason. The Pontiac first went to the right shoulder of the highway. Investigators believe that the driver then over-corrected, causing the car to swerve across the roadway to the left. The vehicle then struck a tree, and it was soon engulfed in flames, according to wavy.

Passenger Pulled From Car

The motorist died in the crash. However, the deputy pulled his male passenger from the car before fire engulfed it. Emergency personnel transported the man via Eastcare Transport helicopter to Vidant Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. There was no immediate report from the hospital regarding his condition.

The state highway patrol is investigating the accident. It is not known why the driver lost control of the Pontiac.
