What is it about the human condition that convinces us we are invincible? We hear stories all the time about life changing events that happen in the blink of an eye. A split second. A heartbeat. In other words, just like that, things can change drastically.
Sometimes, it is a result of our own bad decisions, texting and driving, drinking and driving, distracted and driving, unprotected sex, turning a back on a child in the tub. But other times, we are just driving down the road and a tree falls on our car and kills us (yes! That actually happened to a client of ours!). Maybe that false sense of invincibility is nature’s way of making sure we don’t hide in a corner of our house for our whole lives.
Can we find a balance? Can we not live afraid, but be sure to keep in mind that our time is limited and we must make it count? Can we remember that our decisions – even those that don’t feel like decisions because they happen so quickly – can forever change our lives or the lives of others?
Can we live life a little more aware? A little more present? A little more engaged? Brave enough to leave the house but cognizant enough to realize we are not invincible?
Things will still happen. We can’t live in bubbles. But if something does happen, at least we can take comfort in the fact that we did what we could and we lived with all we had.
